INTRODUCTION TO REBUILDING

REBUILD YOUR EXISTING ROBOTS > Rebuilding allows end-users to improve motion controls with either Servo or Indro (Induction motors with Inverter drive) controls. Rebuilt robots have better speed, torque and repeatability specifications. Controls based on established vendors such as Allen-Bradley or GE Fanuc have the inherent advantage of easy DIY (Do-It-Yourself) service. And large PLC vendors provide spare parts & training across all of North America. Also, simple PLC controls provide 100% complete transparency, so a trained electrician can see all details of operation: including program code, every bit & byte of databases, and complete processor details. With new software, rebuilt robots include more user-friendly screens, better operating & error messages, more flexible path sequences and better in-mold & post-mold tasks.

The major advantage of rebuilding older robots versus buying new robots is the large cost savings. A rebuilt robot can provide the same advanced controls & software for about half the cost of a new robot. There is also an advantage to partial rebuilds and retrofits which vary in cost from 10% to 30% of new robot prices. Some buyers may be concerned about not getting the latest controls, but a rebuilt robot using a state-of-the-art controller is as good as a new robot: the only difference is that large structural components (steel beams and aluminum tubes) are the same.

Rebuild robots can provide faster speeds, which means lower in-mold time, thus increased parts molded per week or month. Rebuild robots also allow continued use of existing spare parts, saving you from buying all new spare parts. Robots that are rebuilt by a qualified vendor allow your technicians to stay familiar with existing mechanics & controls. Rebuilt robots provide improved reliability, thus machine uptime increases and parts molded per year increase. Finally, rebuild and refurbished robots can provide up-to-date software and operator interfaces, thus reducing product change-over time.

LOGIC ONE provides complete remanufacture of ACS Automation robots including: Pulsar, Phaser, Interceptor, Meteor, Titan, Sytrama, Excel, AST/SAT Series, AAM/STM Series, Bosch Servo and Apex robots. LOGIC ONE also provides service & retrofits for Ventax, Elwood Mark2, Paxon and Automated-Assemblies (AAC) robot systems.

SERVICE & SUPPORT

Logic One refurbishes and rebuilds a variety of robot systems. From simple field retrofits to complete remanufacture, Logic One provides older robots new life by replacing all ‘wear & tear’ parts, and retrofitting controls with new PLC hardware and all new user-friendly software. Using Allen-Bradley PLC and touchscreen displays, older robots can be converted from pneumatic to electric, improved with Indro controls, or upgraded to Servo motors. Besides improving overall reliability, rebuilt robots provide better speed and accuracy along with smoother motion. Our SIMPLE robot controls provide jog and teach, single-step debug and dry cycle operation to allow molders to perform service in-house when required.

Call our sales department to learn more about rebuilding your existing ACS, AEC, Sterling or Sterltech robots. Many of these robot systems have been completely re-engineered for improved performance, with new & larger bearings, larger pulleys, rails and support brackets. Robot electrical improvements include industrial grade encoders, twisted-pair encoder cables, and better cable connectors and strain reliefs. We can retrofit or rebuild most PLC and PC-based robot controllers from a variety of U.S. based manufacturers including AEC, Sterling, Ventax, Mark2, Ranger, Pressflow, Steltech and Automated Assemblies.

For molders that want to continue using their current robots, we offer a controls retrofit package, the PLC PLUS Controller, based on Allen-Bradley PLCs. The PLC+ is a SIMPLE (Sequential Inverter/Induction Motor with Plain-Logic Electrics) robot controller that allows molders easy troubleshooting, repairs, training & support. This Do-It-Yourself approach is based on readily available parts from major control vendors such as Allen-Bradley, GE, Kebco & SEW. All of Logic One's PLC-based controls use user-friendly set-up screens that do not require programming. With these easy, straight-forward controls any molder can set-up, run & debug our robots.

The SIMPLE family of robot controllers consists of: 1) the basic PLC-Controller – for use with point-to-point pneumatic, electric (using limit switches), and combination hybrid robots; 2) the PLC+Controller – a SLC controller with HSRV servo modules for position/speed control, used with INDRO (INduction motor & INverter Drive Operation) controls. INDRO controls offer the features of a true servo loop with induction motors controlled by a frequency drive. This sequential (or rectilinear) motion is very cost effective compared to full servo motor systems; and 3) the PLC+2 Controller which uses Double-Speed INDRO controls for significantly faster robot speeds. The DS-INDRO controls allow doubling of typical induction motor speeds to 3,600 rpms.

REBUILDING with NEW CONTROLS

At Logic One, we know that buying a robot is just the first step towards automating your factory. And Logic One delivers complete robot systems, not just robots in-a-box. Our success is based on providing plastics molders with pre/post-mold equipment, end-of-arm tooling, custom programming, and excellent technical support. We do more than most ‘sales & service’ vendors because we design robot systems. Thus, when you or a service technician gets into an unusual problem, we can respond with complete and detailed knowledge of mechanics, electrics and software design. We have the advanced training, tools and instruments to identify and fix unique & intermittent vibrations, electrical noise, and computer glitches. We can provide hard to find parts that are obsolete, troubleshoot difficult control problems, and provide custom programming for various PC & PLC controls and touchscreen displays.

Hardware platforms supported include: Allen-Bradley SLC-500, Micro Logix, Compact Logix, MEI Motion, Megatel Computers, GE-Fanuc, Omron, Modicon and Seimens. Vision computers are based on Cincinnati Automation, Keyence, Omron and Cognex systems.

Cartesian and Scara robot systems include: Epson, Seiko, Adept and Intelligent Actuator systems. Logic One also provides custom software programming using BASIC, Visual BASIC, C or C++ and various ladder-logic coding.

One of Logic One's main strengths is easy-to-read documentation and complete training classes for machine operators, set-up technicians and maintenance workers. If you need help, we will spend additional time on off-shifts to insure proper training levels.

As an injection molder competing with off-shore manufacturers, you need to continuously reduce production costs to insure profitability. One of the best ways of meeting this goal is to automate parts handling at the mold machine. For small to medium sized molders that are budget driven, buying used robots, or buying rebuilt robots is a good alternative to buying new robots. Like ‘certified’ used cars, rebuilt robots can provide good cost savings at half the price of a new robot, while insuring adequate reliability & improved performance.

There are many options, from refurbishing to remanufacturing older robots. This wide range of features allows you to select the level of improvement and pricing you need. As a rule of thumb, good quality used robots can be found for 20% new price, refurbished robots sell for around 30% of new robots, and fully rebuild robots sell at 50% of new robot pricing, while full remanufacture cost upwards of 70% of new price. Refurbished robots usually come with a 6-month limited warranty, rebuilt robots come with a limited one-year warranty, and remanufactured robots have a two-year warranty, thereby reducing your investment risks.

If you’re a molder looking to improve automation on a set budget, consider the cost savings and reliability of rebuilt and refurbished robots. Money saved on redeploying current robots can be used for better EOA tooling, parts feeders or training for automation workers.

Logic One engineers have expertise in many areas of manufacturing technology, such as electronics assembly, mold-machine tending, test-set load/unload, robotic materials handling, part feeders, tooling design, project management, servo machinery, robot assembly systems, vision-guided robots, visual QC inspection, end-user training and servo motor tuning. Logic One engineers have over 100 years of combined experience with robotics and machinery. Call us if you need help with your automated manufacturing systems.
